Understanding Family Separation
A research series from The Integratis Clinic - Understanding the psychological, physical and relational impact of family separation.
Understanding Divorce, Separation and Family Wellbeing
Divorce and parental separation can bring profound changes to family life, affecting far more than the relationship between two parents. For children and young people, separation may involve changes to their home, routines, relationships and sense of security. These experiences can influence emotional and psychological wellbeing, but they may also have implications for physical health, development and relationships with the wider family.
Research increasingly highlights the complexity of children's responses to parental separation. While some children experience significant difficulties, others adjust well, and many experience a mixture of challenges and positive changes over time. The impact of separation cannot be understood through the event alone. The quality of family relationships, exposure to parental conflict, emotional availability of caregivers, individual developmental needs and wider social circumstances all contribute to how children experience and adapt to changes in family life.
At The Integratis Clinic, we believe that understanding children's wellbeing requires consideration of the whole child within the context of their relationships and environment. This research-led series brings together psychological, developmental and physical health perspectives to explore how divorce and separation can affect children, adolescents, parents and extended families.
Through articles, research summaries and carefully selected resources, we aim to examine the evidence, explore aspects of family separation that are often overlooked, and contribute to a more informed understanding of what children and families may need during and beyond this period of change.
