Therapeutic Parent Support

Helping parents when they need it most. Support in Tunbridge Wells for parents seeking a clearer understanding of their child’s emotional wellbeing, behaviour and developmental needs.

About

When your usual ways of supporting your child no longer seem to be working

Parents often seek support when they notice that family life has become more difficult, tensions are increasing at home, or their child’s anxiety, emotions or behaviour are becoming increasingly hard to understand or respond to.

This may be a child who is overwhelmed by worry, struggling at school, becoming more withdrawn, experiencing emotional outbursts, or a family who feels caught in repeated patterns of conflict and distress.

Therapeutic parent support provides an opportunity to think more carefully about what your child may be experiencing, what their emotions and behaviour may be communicating, and what they might need from the adults around them.

Together, we can explore your child’s emotional development, relationships, experiences and the wider context of family life. This may include thinking about anxiety, neurodivergence, school-based difficulties, life changes, or other factors that may be contributing to current challenges.

Parents do not need to be in crisis to benefit from this work. Sometimes having a dedicated time to reflect with an experienced therapist can help you develop a clearer understanding of your child and feel more confident in how you support them.

If you are wondering whether therapeutic parent support may be helpful, we are happy to talk through your concerns and think together about what support may be most appropriate for your family.

Who can benefit from Therapeutic Parent Support?

Therapeutic parent support may be helpful when your child is experiencing anxiety, emotional outbursts, changes in behaviour, school-based difficulties, friendship challenges, or difficulties linked to autism, ADHD or other neurodevelopmental differences.

It can also be valuable during periods of change or uncertainty, such as following family changes, whilst waiting for assessments, or when you have a growing sense that your child is struggling but are unsure what support they may need.

Your child does not need a formal diagnosis, and families do not need to be in crisis to benefit from this work. Many parents seek support because they want a deeper understanding of their child’s experiences and more confidence in how they respond to their needs.

Our Approach

Our parent support work is collaborative, thoughtful and grounded in an understanding of child development, relationships and the wider context of family life.

Together, we think about your child’s experiences, emotional development and what may be contributing to the difficulties you are seeing at home, school or in relationships. We also recognise the pressures that parenting can bring and provide dedicated time to think carefully about what changes may be most helpful for your child and family.

Sessions usually take place fortnightly and can be offered either in person at our Tunbridge Wells clinic or online for families across Kent and Sussex. Therapeutic parent support can be accessed alongside your child’s therapy or as a standalone service for parents who would benefit from a deeper understanding of their child and support in considering the most helpful next steps.

As a multidisciplinary clinic, we can also consider the wider picture, including emotional wellbeing, neurodevelopment and physical health. Where appropriate, we may recommend additional therapeutic, neurodevelopmental or health-based support to ensure your family is accessing the most appropriate care.
